符籙被認為是具有法力的，在一般中國家庭中都可以見到，用來祛災辟邪。若就欣賞書法藝術的角度，是極具藝術價值的，而這價值一直都是被低估的。“道教符籙選“的符籙是由正一道教李游坤道長所提供的，這些符籙除了一般大眾常用的之外，另有許多跟動物，特別是貓狗有關的符籙。影片的拍攝又讓狗的舌頭代替了神明之筆，來畫出這些符籙，彷彿神明附身在這隻狗上，或這隻狗因為吃了無數的經文，已經漸漸有了神性。

Talismanic diagrams (fu) are traditionally understood to possess operative spiritual efficacy. Commonly found in domestic spaces throughout Chinese households, they function as ritual instruments for warding off misfortune and dispelling malign forces. Yet, when approached from the perspective of calligraphic aesthetics, these forms reveal a distinct artistic value—one that has long been overlooked and systematically undervalued within the history of art.

The talismans presented in “Excerpts from the Taoist Protective Talisman” are provided by the Orthodox Unity (Zhengyi) Daoist priest You-Kun Lee. Beyond those widely circulated for everyday protective use, the collection includes numerous lesser-known talismans associated with animals, particularly cats and dogs, extending the talismanic tradition into the realm of interspecies life.

In the filmic enactment, the dog’s tongue substitutes for the divine brush, tracing and inscribing these talismanic forms. This gesture displaces authorship from the human hand to the animal body, as if the deity had momentarily possessed the dog, or as though the animal—having ingested countless scriptures—had gradually internalized and embodied a form of latent divinity.
