After receiving an artist fee to participate in a group show in Taipei, Hung-Chih Peng exchanged the money into hundred dollar bills. He completely covered his friend Ah-Zhong, who has been crippled since suffering from polio as a child, with the money. Peng sent out an email advertising that money would be available for people to take during the opening of the exhibition. Once Ah-Zhong’s covered body was presented to the crowd at the event, it took no more than ten seconds before all the bills were removed, exposing the performer’s naked figure. Were these people simply following instructions? Was the incentive only pecuniary or were other considerations at stake? And why did the rapid and aggressive denuding not cease once the person underneath was revealed? Functioning almost as a social science experiment, the piece leads to a fundamental questioning of human nature. In addition, it makes apparent the oft-concealed but ever-present relationship of money to artistic practice.
