”"One Dalmatian" & "One Lassie”             Digital C-Print or Light Box            2000            110x100 cm each

On the left is a profile of a collie. We are at first struck by the enormity of its eye. It is as if it were wearing a small eye patch. Then the relationship between the furry multicolored body and the whiteness of the tail and legs proves puzzling. It slowly dawns on the viewer that this is in fact the dog in a dog costume. On the right, the masquerade is much less convincing. A visibly brown dog is dressed in an ill-fitting Dalmatian skin with a long, black dangling ear. The two dogs in costume seem to be engaged in a staring match, as if attempting to assess what type of creature stands before them. Of course all of this is an illusion. The dogs’ eyes are covered; they are unable to see. Instead, the main viewing relationship consists of the human viewer looking at them. The habitual assessment of dogs, according to an arbitrarily constructed hierarchy of breeds, is scrambled. It becomes apparent that identity is not so much a question of how we see ourselves but, rather, how others see us.
